초록1 본 연구는 미국 다국적기업의 해외 자회사를 대상으로 해외 R&D센터 입지조건의 결정요인을 분석하고 있다. 1982-2009년 사이의 패널자료를 이용해, 51개국을 대상으로 분석하였으며, 대상 국가는 선진국뿐만 아니라 개도국을 포함하고 있다. 기존 연구에 대한 검증과 함께, 기존 연구에서 소홀히 다룬 지식재산권 보호제도의 영향에 대해 집중 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과 해외 자회사의 R&D활동은 투자유치국의 시장규모가 클수록, 연구개발 인적자원이 풍부할수록, 기술혁신에 대한 노력이 클수록, 그리고 세율이 낮을수록 더 활발한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 개방의 정도는 해외 R&D 입지선정에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 지식재산권 보호정도는, 전체 표본의 경우, R&D 입지선정에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 그러나 소득수준별 회귀분석 결과, 개도국에 대한 R&D지출은 지식재산권 보호정도에 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
초록2 This study investigates the determinants of the location of overseas R&D by US multinationals. The empirical analysis was conducted using a panel data set of 51 countries from 1982 to 2009, of which 24 were developed countries and 27 were developing countries. The estimation result shows that R&D activity of foreign affiliates gets stronger as the market size becomes bigger. The abundance of R&D resources & the scale of national technical effort for innovation have a positive impact on the locational choice of overseas R&D by the foreign affiliates. It also shows that tax rates have a negative relationship with the R&D expenditures. However, openness of the country did not act as a statistically significant incentive for foreign R&D location decisions. The system of patent rights protection did play a significant role for the inflows of R&D activity. The split sample of developed and developing countries, however, indicates that foreign affiliates' R&D inducing role of patent rights protection is valid only for the developed countries and not for the developing countries.
