초록 1 This paper investigates the opinions, English proficiency and educational background of 128 specialist blue collar employees at a chaebol ship management company in South Korea. This paper examines whether 'hagwon' education is a requirement for employment or if public schooling/university and or self-study alone can develop the communicative competence required. This paper demonstrates specialist blue collar workers can develop the English language skill required to work in a ship management company without a significant amount of 'hagwon' education. Empirical data estimates that this group has a high level English proficiency: 57% of the individuals speak, 68% listen, 76% write and 92% read in English every day. Moreover, 58% of the employees take 1 hour of English ‘hagwon’ education at the shipping company after participating in education all of their lives. This paper suggests that the Korean economy may benefit from an education policy that develops proficient English language users to meet the demands of globalization.
초록 2 본 연구에서는 한국의 특정 선박관리회사에 고용된 128명의 전문 현장노동자의 영어교육에 관한 인식도, 영어숙련 정도 및 교육배경을 조사하였다. 설문조사에서는 학원을 통한 영어 사교육이 해운회사의 취업에 필요한지의 여부와 공교육 및 대학교육 혹은 자율학습 만으로도 현장에서 요구되는 수준의 의사소통 능력을 개발하는데 충분한지를 조사하였다. 조사결과 전문 현장노동자들은 상당한 학원 교육을 받지 않고도 회사의 작업 현장에서 요구되는 영어구사 능력을 개발할 수 있는 것으로 답변하였다. 설문자료에 의하면 설문응답자 집단은 높은 수준의 영어 숙련도를 지닌 것으로 판단되며 응답자 중 일상적으로 말하는 능력은 57%, 듣기 능력은 68%, 쓰기 능력은 76%, 그리고 읽기 능력은 92%가 갖춘 것으로 답변하였다. 아울러 58%의 응답자는 회사에서 학원 영어교육에 1시간가량의 학습시간을 투입하는 것으로 응답하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 통하여 세계화의 요구에 부합할 수 있는 수준의 영어 구사능력을 갖춘 인력을 개발하는 교육정책을 수립하고 집행하는 것이 한국 경제에도 도움을 줄 수 있다는 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다.
