초록1 기존의 국제화와 경영성과의 상관성에 관한 연구들은 U-shaped 형태 또는 inverted U-shaped의 관계를 도출해 왔다. 본 연구에서는 국제화 과정에서의 비용절감이라는 기회요인과 해외사업 운영에 있어서 기업의 복잡한 조직 관리 등과 같은 위협요인이 동시에 발생하고 있음에 근거하여 비용 효율성에 대한 국제화 속도의 비선형 관계를 규명하였다. 본 연구에서는 2005년에서 2008년까지의 기간 동안 코스닥에 상장된 443개 국내 중소기업들을 대상으로 국제화의 속도가 비용의 효율성(원재료비의 효율성, 노무비의 효율성, 전체 비용의 효율성)에 미치는 영향에 대해서 분석하였다. 실증분석의 결과는 국제화의 속도는 전체비용의 효율성과 원재료비의 효율성에 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여주고 있으나, 노무비의 효율성에는 어떠한 유의적인 영향이 발견되지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 기업의 국제화의 초기에 기업은 상당한 외국인 비용의 부담에서 벗어나지 못하고 있음을 의미한다. 그러나 이러한 비용의 증가는 학습의 경제와 진출기업의 네트워크 활용 등으로 인하여 빠르게 감소하게 됨을 보여준다. 연구결과는 자원의 제약에 한계를 드러내는 국내중소기업은 국제화 과정에서 학습의 경제와 진출기업의 네트워크 활용 등으로 급변하는 글로벌 경쟁구도의 사업 환경 하에서 기업을 지속적으로 성장시켜야 할 것이라는 시사점을 제공한다.
초록2 The previous studies related with the relationship between internationalization and firm performance suggested that the link exhibits either U-shaped or inverted U-shaped form. However, This study examined the non-linear effect of firm internationalization on cost efficiency, considering both internationalization opportunities (such as cost reduction benefits) and threats (such as increased organizational complexity and various problems on business in foreign markets). Using 443 Korean small and medium sized firms listed on the KOSDAQ, this study investigated the effect of internationalization speed on cost efficiency. The empirical results showed there is a negative effect of internationalization speed on overall cost efficiency and material cost efficiency, but no impact on labor cost efficiency. This indicates that firms initially have lots of liabilities of foreignness when expanding internationally. However, increase of the liabilities of foreignness rapidly diminishes by learning economies and networks of entering firms. This study provides an implication for that firms should grow by increasing cost efficiency in rapidly changing global business environments.
